Training at the Yellowstone County Detention Facility:
Training is an on-going process. Officers receive 40 hours of in-service training per year as a minimum. "New hired" Officers normally receive six (6) weeks of "On-the-Job-Training" (OJT) where the "new hire" shadows other Officers, observing the numerous tasks that Officers perform throughout the Facility. All Officers must attend the 120 hour "Correction/Detention Officers Basic" (CDOB) at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy (MLEA) located in Helena, Montana within the first year of employment.

The curriculum of the CDOB at the State Academy consist of:
Legal Issues, Interpersonal Communications, Use of Force, Cell and Body Searches, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, Report Writing, Human Growth, Inmate Classification, Inmate Intake, Finger Printing, Medical Screening, Ethics and Professionalism, Use of restraints, Pressure Point Control Tactics (PPCT), Suicidal Behaviors, Emergency Procedures, Stress Management, Inmate Supervision, Inmate Discipline, OC-10 Spray, Security Principles, Cell Extraction, Cultural Diversity, Substance Abuse and a Physical Fitness test.

In-service training consists of but not limited to the following:
First Aid, Security Procedures, PPCT Re-Certification, OC-10 Re-Certification, Report Writing, Interpersonal Communications, SCBA, Hostage Training, Blood-borne and Airborne Pathogens, Inmate Supervision, Use of Force and other subjects deemed necessary through Administration. Specialized training is also offered for Officers who are on the Yellowstone County Detention SERT Team and Hostage Negotiation Team.
