Addressing
Due to the need to maintain mappable road lines
and address points for the 9-1-1 system, the Yellowstone County
GIS Department has assumed the responsibility for road naming
and the assignment of address numbers. Addresses for all new structures
must be assigned or verified by the GIS Department, which can
be done over the phone at (406) 869-3553 or by visiting Room 305
of the County Court House. There is no fee, and the GIS Dept.
provides documentation of your legal physical address. Also, reflective
address numbers will be provided free of charge upon your request,
for posting at your property. It is important to establish your
address with the GIS Department to ensure that your structure
location is GPSd for inclusion in the enhanced 9-1-1 map
system and database. If you receive a new address assignment from
another source such as from the Post Office or a developer, it
may be in conflict with the physical address in the GIS database.
Road Names and Road Name Changes
The GIS Department is also involved in the review
process for new subdivisions to make certain that proposed new
road names are unique and that roads are named where necessary.
A new guideline for road naming has been implemented to improve
the capability of public safety personnel to locate citizens in
an emergency and to reduce the need for future address changes
in areas of growth:
A road should be named when it exceeds ¼-mile
in length and/or provides exclusive access to three or more dwellings.
